In Copenhagen, buildings, house walls and streets from different historical periods are to be seen standing side by side. Here it is not uncommon that a magnificent, modern glass and steel building may be seen standing next to a small 18th century house, that a small working-class home is situated next to a castle or that an old chimney-stack may be found hidden behind a large new apartment block. This cultural environment is precisely what makes Copenhagen such a unique metropolis.
Bearing the preservation of this distinctive cultural environment in mind, the Museum of Copenhagen is responsible for advising on matters concerning the preservation of the city's buildings. Furthermore, the museum is also responsible for photographing condemned buildings before they are demolished, with a view to documenting the city's ongoing history and development.
